Slater Wows Them At Department Of State Filing Office
Bruce Slater,
Democratic candidate for Pennsylvania’s 16th Congressional District,
hand-carried 135 nomination petitions to Pennsylvania’s filing office
in Harrisburg on Monday, February 11th. He beat the filing deadline,
February 12th. He beat the bad weather predicted for the February
12th. And he overwhelmed the Department of State officials
responsible for counting signatures by producing over 2700 signatures
on his petitions which were collected in Lancaster, Chester, and Berks
Counties. Only 1000 signatures are required under the Pennsylvania
Election Code.
Slater, who has been
campaigning since June, 2007 to defeat 6-term Republican Congressman
Joseph R. Pitts, credited the hard work of his campaign committee and
the elected and appointed Democratic Committee persons in the three
counties that comprise the District: Berks, Chester, and Lancaster.
“Committee-people are the heart and soul of this effort and without
their hard work and support I wouldn’t be able seriously challenge Joe
Pitts.”
While canvassing his own
district for signatures in Salisbury Township, he visited many homes
where only one of the married adults were registered Democrat. But he
uniformly found support among Republicans who were eager to discuss
their dissatisfaction with the war in Iraq, their concerns about the
health and lack of appropriate healthcare for returning veterans, the
economy, and the state of the nation’s healthcare system.
Slater is a US Navy
veteran and the sole proprietor of a restoration contracting
business. He resides with his family in Narvon, Lancaster County. He
has been endorsed for the Congressional seat by both the Lancaster and
Chester County Democratic Committees as well as several notable
political figures in Pennsylvania, including Lois K. Herr and
Catherine Baker Knoll.
