Last week, Joe Pitts, who
holds the U.S. House seat in the 16th Congressional district, voted
against a resolution that prevents the United States-Colombia Trade Promotion Agreement
from coming to House
floor for approval. This House resolution removes the 90-day
provision requiring Congress to vote on the United States-Colombia
Free Trade bill. The measure passed the
House by a vote of 224 to 195. By
voting no, Pitts was voting to for the agreement.
Under the Democratic
leadership, the House postponed action on the resolution indefinitely.
Nancy Pelosi and the Administration have been in a bitter struggle
over the agreement and an economic stimulus package.
Ms. Pelosi accused the president of putting
his trade agenda ahead of Americans’
economic troubles while pursuing stale
economic policy. “For seven long years, the
president’s failed economic plan has stiffed
the American people,” Ms. Pelosi told
reporters. “First, we need to address the
worsening economy in our country,” she said.
Democrats see the trade
deal as a potential bargaining chip with the administration in a push
for more economic aid like an extension of unemployment benefits,
assistance for workers displaced by trade agreements and perhaps an
expansion of a children’s health insurance program.

Pitts' vote against the
House resolution supported the president's desire to implement the
trade agreement without regard to the current national economic
crisis. He has voted constituently with big business at the expense of
working families in his constituency.
